What Is a Millibar?

A millibar is a unit used to measure pressure.

The millibar is a non-SI metric unit for pressure. In the metric system, "milli" is the prefix for thousandths, or 10-3. Millibars can be abbreviated as mbar; for example, 1 millibar can be written as 1 mbar.

Uses

The symbol mb was originally used to represent the millibar, but due to a conflict the use of the symbol mb is deprecated and the use of mbar is preferred. Due to it's convenient size, the millibar is commonly used in meteorology, although many meteorologists are also using the hectopascal, which is exactly equal in pressure.

How Much Is a Millibar?

One millibar is equal to one-thousandth of a bar, which is defined as the pressure of one newton per square meter. One millibar is also equal to one hectopascal.

How to Convert Millibars

To convert millibars to another unit of pressure, you need to multiply the value by a conversion factor. A conversion factor is a numerical value used to change the units of a measurement without changing the value.[1]

You can find the conversion factors for millibars in the conversion table below.

Then, multiply the pressure measurement by the conversion factor to find the equivalent value in the desired unit of measurement.

millibars × conversion factor = result
