How to Use a Calculator
Calculators are essential for calculating the result of mathematical problems. They can come in the form of a basic online calculator like the one above, a scientific calculator, or a task-specific calculator such as our long division calculator.
The standard operations that are on nearly every calculator are:
- Addition (+), Subtraction (–), Multiplication (×), and Division (÷):
- Enter numbers and press the respective operator button. For example, to calculate 10 × 4, press 10, ×, 4, followed by =.
- Equals (=):
- Use the = button to calculate and display the result of your equation.
- Percentage (%):
- Use the % button to convert the number from percent to decimal.
- Plus/Minus (+/-):
- Use the +/- button to switch numbers from positive to negative or vice-versa.
Unlike most basic calculators, which perform operations from left to right, the one above respects the order of operations rules like a typical graphing calculator. You can use the Fx button to access the parentheses keys.
You can also use our PEMDAS calculator to evaluate expressions following the order of operations.
