An are is a unit used to measure area.

The are is a non-SI metric unit for area. Ares can be abbreviated as a; for example, 1 are can be written as 1 a.

Background and Origin

The are was originally a unit of area in the metric system and was originally used as a land measurement. The hectare is more commonly used in land measures due to it's more convenient proportions, but the are is still used in real estate and land measurements throughout the world. When the International System of Units was ratified the are was not included as a unit, even though it is derived from SI units.

One are is equal to 100 square meters, or the area of a square with 10 meter sides.
