Newton Definition and Usage
The Newton scale is used to measure temperature.
Newton can be abbreviated as N; for example, 1 degree Newton can be written as 1 °N.
What Is the Newton Scale?
The Newton scale is a temperature scale that sets a fixed zero point equal to the freezing point water. The scale uses both arithmetic progression and geometric progression. The scale defines 18 reference points and the corresponding "degrees of heat" and geometric progressions.
Background and Origin
The Newton scale is a temperature scale named for its creator, Sir Isaac Newton, and was created to measure degrees of heat at the beginning of the 18th century. The scale was most likely created out of necessity as his work at the time with identifying the boiling points of metals was a likely inspiration.
