What Is a Kilobit?

A kilobit is a unit used to measure data storage.

Kilobits can be abbreviated as kb; for example, 1 kilobit can be written as 1 kb.

How Much Is a Kilobit?

In the International System of Quantities, one kilobit is equal to 1,000 bits, or 103 bits. However, the kilobit is commonly used interchangeably with the kibibit (Kib), which is equal to 1,024 bits or 210 bits in the binary system.

So, depending on the context, one kilobit is equal to 1,000 or 1,024 bits.

How to Convert Kilobits

To convert kilobits to another unit of data storage, you need to multiply the value by a conversion factor. A conversion factor is a numerical value used to change the units of a measurement without changing the value.[1]

You can find the conversion factors for kilobits in the conversion table below.

Then, multiply the data storage measurement by the conversion factor to find the equivalent value in the desired unit of measurement.

kilobits × conversion factor = result

You can also use a calculator, such as one of the converters below, for the conversion.
