What Is Torque
Torque, often referred to as the moment of force, is a fundamental concept in physics and engineering that measures the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis, fulcrum, or pivot. It's essentially the rotational equivalent of linear force.
The magnitude of torque depends on two factors: the magnitude of the force applied and the distance from the point of rotation to where the force is applied. This distance is known as the moment arm or lever arm.
Torque is mathematically defined as the product of the force and the moment arm, and it's usually measured in newton-meters (Nm) or pound-feet (lb-ft).
