How to Convert Oven Directions to Air Fryer Temp and Cooking Time
Most recipes are written with a conventional oven in mind, but they can often be made just as easily, if not much more easily, in an air fryer. You can adapt your recipe’s cooking time and temperature for an air fryer pretty easily.
The Short Version
According to air fryer expert Linda Larsen (she’s written many air fryer cookbooks), when converting traditional oven recipes to an air fryer, the general rule of thumb is:[1]
- Reduce the cooking temperature by 25 °F (about 15 °C)
- Reduce the cooking time by about 20%
Why This Works:
Air fryers cook food faster and more efficiently due to the rapid circulation of hot air, which results in quicker and crispier cooking.
Step-by-Step Conversion Process
Step One: Lower the Temperature
If a recipe calls for cooking at 400 °F in an oven, set your air fryer to 375 °F instead.
Step Two: Shorten the Cooking Time
If the oven recipe says to cook for 30 minutes, reduce that by 20%. You can do that by multiplying the cooking time in minutes by 0.8. For instance:
30 minutes × 0.8 = 24 minutes
So, if a recipe calls for an oven time of 30 minutes, you’d cook for 24 minutes in the air fryer.
Step Three: Check for Doneness Early
Because air fryer models vary, start checking for doneness a few minutes before the calculated time. If it’s not quite ready, you may need to continue cooking in 2-3 minute increments.
Step Four: Don’t Overcrowd the Basket
Air fryers cook best when the hot air can circulate freely, so you may need to cook in batches if necessary.
Step Five: Shake or Flip for Even Cooking
Some foods like fries or chicken wings need to be shaken for even cooking. Shake the basket or flip the items halfway through to ensure even crisping.
