Percent to PPM Converter

Convert a concentration in percent to parts per million using the converter below.

How to Convert Percent to PPM

Parts per cent (%) and parts per million (ppm) are both measures of the concentration of a substance in a mixture or solution or mixture. They are similar measurements, but at a different scale:

  • parts per cent (%): 1 part substance per 100 parts solution
  • parts per million (ppm): 1 part substance per 1,000,000 parts solution

To convert a concentration in percent to ppm, you need to know the conversion ratio to scale the measurement. Then you can use the percent to ppm formula to solve.

Since one percent (102) is ten thousand times smaller than one million (106), the conversion ratio is 10,000 percent/ppm.

Percent to PPM Formula

Therefore, the formula to convert a percent to ppm is:

percent × 10,000 = ppm

So, to convert a concentration in parts per cent to parts per million, multiply the concentration in ppm by 10,000. Similarly, you can divide the concentration in parts per million by 10,000 to convert ppm to percent.

For example, let’s convert 1.5 percent of a substance in a solution to parts per million. Substitute 1.5% in the formula above to solve.

1.5% × 10,000 = 15,000 ppm

Thus, a concentration of 1.5% is equivalent to 15,000 ppm.
