PPB to PPM Converter

Convert a concentration in parts per billion to parts per million using the converter below.

How to Convert PPB to PPM

Parts per billion (ppb) and parts per million (ppm) are measures of the concentration of a substance in a mixture or solution or mixture. They are similar measurements, but on a different scale:

  • parts per billion (ppb): 1 part substance per 1,000,000,000 parts solution
  • parts per million (ppm): 1 part substance per 1,000,000 parts solution

To convert a concentration in ppb to ppm, you need to know the conversion ratio between them to scale the measurement down. Then you can use the ppb to ppm formula to find the result.

Since one billion (109) is one thousand times larger than one million (106), the conversion ratio is 1,000 ppm/ppb.

PPB to PPM Formula

Therefore, the formula to convert ppb to ppm is:

ppb ÷ 1,000 = ppm

So, to convert a concentration in parts per billion to parts per million, divide the concentration in ppm by 1,000. Similarly, you can multiply a concentration in parts per million by 1,000 to convert ppm to ppb.

For example, let’s convert 5,500 ppb of a substance in a solution to parts per million. Substitute 5,500 ppb in the formula above to solve.

5,500 ppb ÷ 1,000 = 5.5 ppm

Thus, a concentration of 5,500 ppb is equivalent to 5.5 ppm.
