How to Calculate Parts per Million

Concentration measurements are crucial in chemistry for describing the amount of a substance relative to another in a mixture or solution. One common method of expressing concentration is in parts per million (expressed ppm), which indicates the number of parts of a substance in a million parts of the total mixture or solution.

One part-per-million denotes one part of solute per one million parts of the solution.

To calculate the concentration of a substance, you’ll need to identify the mass of solute and the mass of the solution. Then, you can use a simple formula to calculate the concentration in parts per million.

PPM Formula

The concentration in parts per million can be calculated using the following formula:

ppm = mass of solute / mass of solution × 1,000,000

Thus, the concentration in parts per million is equal to the mass of the solute divided by the total mass of the solution, times one million.
