How to Calculate How Many Weeks Are Between Two Dates
Calculating the number of weeks between two dates may sound simple, but there’s a tad more nuance than one might think. There are a few methods you can use to find the duration in weeks.
Before we cover the methods used to calculate the duration, it’s important to understand that there are seven days in one week. Therefore, if you calculate the total number of days between until a date, you can divide that by 7 to find the total number of weeks.
The following methods all use this as the basis of their calculations by counting the days between dates and then converting that result to weeks.
Method One: Calculate Weeks Manually
The first method to find how many weeks are between two dates is to use a calendar and follow these steps.
Step One: Identify the Start and End Dates
Begin by identifying both the start and end dates – you’ll need the day, month, and year of both.
Step Two: Calculate the Days Remaining in the Start Month
Let’s begin with the start month; subtract the day in the start month from the total number of days in that month.
For instance, if the start date is April 20, since there are 30 total days in April, there are 30 – 20 = 10 days left in April.
Step Three: Calculate the Number of Days in the End Month
Next, use the day of the end month as the number of days to add to the total from that month.
For instance, if the end date is June 15, then there are 15 days to be added from the end month.
Step Four: Find the Number of Days in the Interim Months
If there are any full months between the start and end dates, then add the days in each month between them to the total number of days.
For instance, if the date range is from February 15 to April 12, then you’ll need to add the 31 days of March to the total days from steps two and three.
Step Five: Calculate the Total Number of Days
The next step is to add up the days from steps two, three, and four to calculate the total number of days between the start and end dates.
Step Six: Calculate the Total Number of Weeks
The final step is to convert the total number of days to weeks to find the total number of weeks between the dates. To do so, divide the total number of days by 7 to calculate the total number of weeks.
Method Two: Spreadsheet Software
You can also use computer software such as Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel to find how many weeks are between two dates.
Both programs support the DAYS function, which allows you to find the difference between two dates in days. Then, you can divide the result by 7 to find the difference in weeks.
Use the following formula in a cell to find the difference in weeks between two dates:
DAYS(end_date, start_date) / 7
Of course, you can also use our time calculator to accomplish this task as well.
